Background
About Rangoli
The Story
Rangoli opened in April 2011 as the second restaurant from Grupo Bembi, founded by Sanjay Das Gupta. Originally from India, Das Gupta studied hotel management and joined the Taj Hotels chain in 1992, working there for nine years before moving to London to work at an Indian restaurant. He settled in Barcelona and opened Bembi on Consell de Cent in the Eixample in 2006. Five years later, Rangoli brought Indian street food to the Barceloneta waterfront. The name 'Rangoli' comes from a traditional Indian decorative folk art. Grupo Bembi now operates four restaurants: Bembi, Rangoli and Little Andaman in Barcelona, plus Mumak Tropical in Ibiza.
The Cuisine
Rangoli specialises in Indian street food, dishes inspired by roadside cafes, street hawkers, food stalls, and chaat stands across the subcontinent. The extensive a la carte menu spans chaats, samosas, pakoras, tandoor-grilled meats and fish, classic curries like chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo, biryanis, and traditional breads. Vegetarian options are plentiful, and the kitchen adjusts spice levels to individual preference. The drinks programme includes Indian beers (Cobra, Kingfisher), gin tonics, cocktails, lassis, and wines by the glass or bottle.
The Team
Head chef Anand Singh Negi was born in northern India and also lived extensively in the south, giving him exposure to cuisines from across the subcontinent. He trained in classical Indian cuisine under masters of the craft, worked for the Taj Hotels group in India, then developed creative dishes during a stint in London before joining Grupo Bembi. He has published a cookbook, 'Cocina india para occidentales' (Indian Cuisine for Westerners), with over 100 recipes. Owner Sanjay Das Gupta oversees the Grupo Bembi operations.
