Background

About Kiosk Universal

The Story

Kiosk Universal was founded in 1973 by Benjamin Dominguez, who originally ran a coffee and bocadillo stall serving nightlife workers from La Rambla at 4 a.m. After Barcelona's post-1992 Olympic tourism boom, his sons Alfonso, Antonio, and Benja transformed the stall into a seafood bar in 1998. Now in its third generation, owner Borja Dominguez (born 1991) took over after spending a decade learning alongside his father Alfonso, who worked there 51 years before retiring. As Borja says: 'We will always serve Catalan cuisine. We will not sell out to cheap imitations or fried chicken.'

The Cuisine

The kitchen team grills seafood and market produce on a large griddle in front of customers. Specialities are the seafood platter (around 36 EUR), Galician-style octopus, grilled scallops, razor clams, capipota (traditional Catalan stew), fried artichoke, and steamed mussels. Seasonal wild mushrooms sourced from the Petras stall in the market. The signature flan is created by chef Miguel Angel Arza. Around 30 EUR per person without drinks.

The Team

The kitchen team includes Miguel Angel Arza, Dani, Jose, Javi, Carles, Peter, Everton, and Gato, led by third-generation owner Borja Dominguez. Google reviewers give it 4.5/5 from 1,038 reviews.
