Background
About Grill Room-Bar Thonet
The Story
Grill Room-Bar Thonet occupies a modernist building on Carrer dels Escudellers that opened in 1902 as Bar Torino, founded by Italian businessman Flaminio Mezzalama to market Martini & Rossi vermouth, making it one of Barcelona's first vermouth bars. After redesign by architect Ricard de Capmany i Roura, the venue was renamed Grill Room in 1916, preserving modernist elements including ceramic walls and an arched, wood-framed entrance. In September 2018, chef Albert Ventura partnered with Albert Taberner (owner of the London Bar) to take over the space and create the current concept, which pairs Mediterranean tapas with the building's heritage.
The Cuisine
Chef Albert Ventura serves Mediterranean and Catalan tapas with a market-driven, product-focused approach. The à la carte menu features house vermut (4.50 EUR), amanida russa de bonítol (7 EUR), escalivada al carbó de llenya (9 EUR), patates braves Thonet (7 EUR), truita de patates i ceba (9 EUR), steak tartar amb mascarpone (21 EUR), canelons de tres carns (16 EUR), and navalles a la brasa (16 EUR). A weekly lunch menu is offered (18 EUR on the week verified April 2026). Around 40 EUR per person a la carte without drinks.
The Team
Chef-owner Albert Ventura trained at El Celler de Can Roca (3 Michelin stars), Ca l'Isidre, Les Petxines, and Paco Torreblanca's pastry workshop. He previously ran Restaurant Coure in Barcelona for more than a decade and was part of 'Los 7 Magníficos', a chef collective associated with Mahou San Miguel. Day-to-day kitchen operations are led by chef Aníbal Ginesta. His business partner Albert Taberner is the owner of London Bar in Barcelona.
