Background
About Tepic
The Story
Tepic opened in 2008 in Chueca with the idea of serving authentic, traditional Mexican cooking in a room free of the usual stereotypes and clichés. It later moved to Calle de Ayala in the Salamanca district to give the project a fresh push. From early on it has chased authenticity in its raw materials, and chillies, jícama, epazote and tomatillo now grow in a kitchen garden the restaurant owns in the province of Ávila.
The Cuisine
Traditional Mexican without the clichés, cooked with ingredients like squash blossom, jícama, huitlacoche, epazote, jitomate, nopales and many kinds of chilli. Starters run from guacamole, shrimp aguachile and a shrimp cocktail to quesadillas, chicken tinga tostadas, Yucatecan cochinita panuchos, blue-corn chorizo panuchos, sopecitos and chicken flautas. Tacos come as sharing plates on corn or flour tortillas: al pastor from the trompo, cochinita pibil, Baja-style fish, Sinaloa's tacos gobernador, steak and arrachera with a gouda crust.
Bar or Table
There are two spaces. The bar is a restaurant-mezcalería with high tables and a classic Mexican counter holding more than 60 tequilas and mezcals, plus sotoles and cocktails made to order by barman Javier García Quiñones, and the whole carta is served there. The dining room seats about 70 at long tables or smaller ones, in a white, mirrored room planted with more than 200 cacti.
Practicalities
The kitchen runs non-stop: 13:30 to 23:00 Monday to Thursday, to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 13:30 to 16:00 on Sunday. Tacos are sharing plates at about €29 to €31.50. The terrace carries a 10% supplement. Book online or call 915 22 08 50; Serrano is the nearest metro and Serranopark the nearest car park. There's delivery too.
