Mawey Taco Bar Gran Vía is the San Bernardo branch of Mawey, a small Madrid group of 'taquerías gastronómicas' with sister bars on Calle de Olid, López de Hoyos and in Majadahonda, plus a food truck. Tacos come two to a plate and are meant to be grouped and shared: al pastor with pineapple, wagyu brisket with corn cream, duck carnitas in mole, chopitos in escabeche sauce. Most of the carta is gluten-free. It's open 13:30 to midnight and closed on Tuesday.

Background

About Mawey Taco Bar Gran Vía

The Story

Mawey is a Madrid group of gastronomic taquerías that keeps the essence of Mexican cooking while working with seasonal produce. Besides this Gran Vía branch it runs bars on Calle de Olid in Chamberí, López de Hoyos and in Majadahonda, and a food truck.

The Cuisine

Mexican, adapted and evolved: tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas and tostadas with Spanish produce in the mix, from Reblochon on bife tacos to Gamoneu in an oxtail quesadilla.

From the carta

Tacos are served two per plate, from Baja-style fish with Cádiz adobo (€9) and chilango beef with mango-habanero (€10) to wagyu brisket with corn cream and tajín (€12.40), duck carnitas with mole manchamanteles (€12.80) and crispy chopitos in mussel-escabeche sauce (€13.50). Around them: homemade guacamole (€9.80), a yellow ceviche with passion-fruit leche de tigre, cochinita pibil enchiladas, huitlacoche or oxtail quesadillas, and chilaquiles with fried egg. Almost all of it is gluten-free, though the kitchen is shared.

Experience

Mawey Taco Bar Gran Vía Dining Experience

Informal and quick, with an original cocktail list. It's not a starter-and-main place: the house suggests ordering several tacos of the same kind and sharing them around the table.

Getting There

Calle de San Bernardo 5, inside the galería at that number, a minute from Santo Domingo metro (L2) and Gran Vía.

Nearby

Palacio is the grand, historic western edge of the centre, wrapped around Palacio Real de Madrid and Plaza de Oriente. The eating runs from tavern cooking that has not changed in generations to small rooms doing something quieter and more modern. Teatro Real and Jardines de Sabatini set the pace, which is slower here.
