Background

About La Trainera

The Story

La Trainera was founded in 1966 by Miguel García Gómez, who came from a family in the fish trade and brought the best catch from the ports to Madrid before moving into restaurants. He held stall number 38 as a wholesaler at Mercamadrid, later opened a second seafood house, Los Remos, in El Plantío, received Madrid's Medalla al Mérito Turístico in 2011, and died in April 2016, aged 92. La Trainera moored, as the site puts it, on Calle Lagasca, and it's kept a strongly nautical look ever since. The name comes from the traína, the fine-mesh net old boats used for anchovies and sardines. It's listed in the Guía Repsol.

The Cuisine

Fish and shellfish, top quality and treated simply. The house leans on its own supply chain: viveros (holding tanks) at the origin ports, a wholesale stall in Mercamadrid, and product reaching the tables within hours. Rodaballo, turbot, is the dish it hangs its name on.

The Carta

Rodaballo a la Trainera, a whole turbot priced by weight (€96 a kilo on the current carta), is the dish the house is proudest of, alongside the Lenguado Trainera, grilled sole, its other classic. Hake comes a la romana, grilled, meunière, a la andaluza, a la gallega or a la marinera with Carril clams and prawns, and there's monkfish a la Trainera and sea bass a la espalda. The shellfish runs from Galician camarones and percebes to velvet crab, spider crab, brown crab, carabineros, langoustines and Cantabrian lobster and spiny lobster by weight. To start: Gran Reserva bellota ham, pulpo a la gallega, the house ensaladilla, Huelva white prawns, a seafood salpicón, Santoña anchovies, bienmesabe and fried squid, many in half portions, plus a seafood soup the house calls a speciality. The one meat is a Rubia Gallega entrecôte. Desserts lean Galician: filloas with custard, tarta de Santiago, Arzúa-Ulloa cheese with quince and the house rice pudding.

Rooms and Hours

The kitchen serves non-stop from 13:00 to midnight every day, and dishes can be ordered for takeaway by phone. The nautical rooms include private spaces for 2 to 50 guests for business lunches and celebrations, and the house's Mercamadrid wholesale stall also supplies other restaurants and caterers.
