Background

About El Ventorrillo Murciano

The Story

El Ventorrillo Murciano, also known by the name of its bar, Tres Peces, brings the Murcian recipe book to Calle de los Tres Peces in Lavapiés. It's a small, snug room. The married couple who own it split the work between kitchen and dining room, and the head of room is generous with advice. It's listed in the Guía Repsol, and it runs as a lunch place, closed on Mondays.

The Cuisine

Rice is the star: a wide range of rices and paellas from the land and the sea, cooked to a fine point and without excess fat. The house rice is the one with rabbit and snails, and there's also salt cod with vegetables, a huertano of garden vegetables, carabinero rice and arroz a banda. Around the rice sit the Murcian classics: the house salazones, which have a strong reputation, regional cured meats, croquetas, a Murcian salad made the traditional way with preserved tomato, and fish and seafood from the Mediterranean coast.

Starters and the Sweet Finish

Start with salads, the ensaladilla, the house salazones and cured meats from the region, then share a rice. Portions run modest, so if you arrive hungry, order an extra ración. The dessert to try is the galleta frita, a fried biscuit filled with cabello de ángel, the candied squash filling of Murcian pastry. Food can also be ordered to take home.

Murcian Wines

The wine list leans heavily on the Region of Murcia, with more Murcian references than wines from anywhere else. It's a small room, and cooks from other Madrid restaurants are regularly spotted eating here.

The Team

The rice is cooked by José María Muñoz, and the married couple who own the house divide the kitchen and the dining room between them.

El Ventorrillo Murciano Dining Experience

A Murcian arrocería set down in the middle of Lavapiés, built around rice and paella rather than a long evening menu, so it runs mainly at lunch. The room is set up for groups sharing a pan together, with vegetarian options on the table and cocktails alongside.

Getting There

It's on Calle de los Tres Peces in Embajadores, the Lavapiés end of Madrid's Centro district, dense old working Madrid where El Rastro runs through on market days.

Nearby

Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
