Los Porfiados is a small home-cooking restaurant on Calle de Buenavista in Lavapiés, started by four friends, three Argentines and a Catalan, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The motto is comida hecha a mano: Argentine empanadas, a vacío of beef with salsa criolla, milanesa napolitana, salads, burgers and homemade cakes, with a short wine list that includes natural wines. The room is high-ceilinged and warm, furnished with recovered pieces, and dogs are welcome.

Background

About Los Porfiados

The Story

Los Porfiados began with four friends, three Argentines and a Catalan, risking their small savings on a modest home-cooking restaurant. The space had been shut for eight months and battered for years, so they fixed the damp, redid ceilings, walls and floors, restored the skylights, critical furniture and some forgotten machinery, and brought in furniture their families couldn't bear to throw away. The idea was a place without pretensions where time around the table, with its conversations and laughter, is the point. The name plays on porfiado, a roly-poly toy that always rights itself.

The Cuisine

Handmade home cooking with Argentine roots and plenty of detours: empanadas, milanesa and vacío next to tacos, katsu chicken, a bulgur bowl, salmon tataki and duck magret. There's a soup or cream of the day, a summer gazpacho made by Melba, one of the cooks, and off-menu specials at weekends.

The Carta

Starters include the cream of the day (€6.50), French onion soup in winter, a duo of empanadas, one classic with spiced Argentine-style beef and one modern with gorgonzola, mozzarella, pear and dates (€7.80), red-bean tacos with pico de gallo and roast sweet potato, a cod, orange and sweet-potato salad, grilled halloumi with pomegranate molasses, and Santoña tuna belly with tamarind and chipotle. Mains run €15 to €19.50: the Sheriff burger with provolone and pesto, milanesa napolitana, cornflake-crusted katsu chicken, a cecina pizza, vacío with rustic potatoes and salsa criolla, fish and chips, grilled prawns with wasabi mayo, salmon tataki, duck magret with wine-poached pears and baked sea bass with pesto rosso. Homemade cakes and desserts are €6.50.

Wine and Hours

The wine list is short and personal, with by-the-glass options from about €3.10: a Penedès xarel·lo, Madrid syrah from Agrícola Cadalso, Casa Castillo monastrell, natural wines from Son Llebre in Mallorca and an albariño from Rías Baixas, plus Argentine bottles such as Zuccardi Serie A malbec. Los Porfiados opens for dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 20:00, adds lunch from Thursday to Sunday, and closes on Monday; Sunday is lunch only.

Experience

Los Porfiados Dining Experience

High ceilings, skylights and natural light, beautifully peeling walls, low lighting and furniture the owners recovered and restored on a tight budget: it's built to feel lived-in and easy. It suits a relaxed date as much as a long sobremesa with friends. Dogs are welcome, and it takes groups.

Getting There

Calle de Buenavista 18, in Lavapiés, in the Centro district. The venue calls it the heart of the barrio, one of central Madrid's most lived-in corners.

Nearby

Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
