Barra Alta Madrid is the Lagasca sibling of Barra Alta, the product-focused restaurant that opened in Barcelona's Sant Gervasi in 2018. The carta mixes oysters, cold and hot tapas and platillos, with a Catalan streak: a lobster 'bomba' in the Barceloneta style, butifarra with egg and lobster jus, cod buñuelos with romesco. It opens for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday.

Background

About Barra Alta Madrid

The Story

Barra Alta began in Barcelona's Sant Gervasi in 2018 around simple preparations of excellent produce from trusted suppliers; the Madrid restaurant on Calle de Lagasca brings the same idea to Recoletos.

The Cuisine

Mediterranean, with traditional dishes given a modern-creative turn. The carta is published on the restaurant's own site, at around €51–100 per person.

From the carta

Oysters come natural (€5.70) or 'encevichada' with kimchi and coriander (€5.90). Cold tapas include a scallop-and-lobster tartare on corn toast, a nikkei scallop ceviche and ensaladilla with crystal prawns; hot ones run from a roast-meat-and-foie croqueta (€3.10) and smoked cod buñuelo with romesco (€3.90) to the lobster bomba and calamari with yuzu mayo. Platillos include plancha chipirones, Thai-style fried John Dory eaten bones and all, meatballs, callos with chickpeas, bellota pluma with chimichurri and steak tartare. There's also a tasting menu and a wine list.

Nearby

Recoletos runs along the grand boulevards between Plaza de Cibeles and Puerta de Alcalá, where the buildings are stately and the pavements are wide. The eating leans formal and expense-account, with classic dining rooms sitting beside newer, sharper kitchens. It shades into Salamanca as you go east, and the prices follow.
