Introduction

The Madrid coffee shops List We Send to Friends

Madrid has plenty of places to get a coffee, and a smaller set where the coffee is the reason you go. This list covers 18 of them, from Toma Café, Hola Coffee and Naji Specialty Coffee to HanSo Café, Misión Café and Ruda Café. Some are roaster-cafés, some pour guest roasters, one is a record shop, and two are laptop-free. For each we've checked what the venue itself says about its coffee, its hours and its food, so you know what you're walking into.

A Guide to coffee shops in Madrid

What counts as specialty coffee?

Specialty coffee is generally defined as coffee that scores 80 or more out of 100 on the Specialty Coffee Association's scale. In practice you'll see traceable beans, a lighter roast, and baristas who can tell you where the coffee comes from and how it was brewed.

What is torrefacto, and why does it matter?

Torrefacto is a roast where sugar is added to the beans as they roast. It became widespread in Spain after the Civil War, and many traditional café-bars still serve it. Specialty shops roast without added sugar, so the taste is closer to the bean itself.

How do you order coffee in Spain?

A café solo is an espresso with no milk, a cortado is an espresso with a splash of milk, a café con leche has roughly equal parts coffee and milk, and a café manchado is mostly milk stained with coffee. Specialty shops add flat whites, cold brew and filter coffee to that list.

What is filter coffee?

Filter coffee is brewed by pouring hot water through ground coffee in a paper filter, by hand or by machine. You'll see it called V60, Kalita, Chemex, AeroPress or batch brew.

What is the difference between a roaster-café and a coffee shop with guest roasters?

A roaster-café roasts the beans it pours, so the coffee on your table comes straight from the roasting machine on site or nearby. A shop with guest roasters buys from several roasters and rotates them, so the line-up changes from week to week.

How We Built This List

Years of Eating, Asking, and Going Back

We built this list from Madrid specialty-coffee coverage in Devour Tours, The Coffeevine, The Way to Coffee, Mariana in LA, Things Nomads Do, Time Out Madrid, Sugarbmd, Gastroactivity, City Confidential and Café de Especialidad, then cross-checked every name against the Madrid venues we've profiled. A venue made the list only if its own page shows it as a place you go primarily for coffee made with specialty beans: a roaster-café, an espresso bar or a filter bar. We left out brunch places where the coffee is incidental, plus bakeries, chocolate shops and bars. Several names that came up repeatedly in our research aren't included, either because they fall short of the diner ratings we require for our guides or because we don't have a page for them yet. Order follows how often each name came up across the sources and how coffee-led the venue is. Hours change, so we give only what each venue publishes and tell you where to check.

More on how we rank: our methodology and quality standards.

Repsol Solete

Toma Café is a specialty-coffee roastery and café on Calle de la Palma, in the Universidad quarter on the Malasaña side of Centro, and this is its original shop. It opened in autumn 2011, when specialty coffee was still almost unknown in Madrid. It roasts its own beans, and the menu runs to flat whites and cold brew. The food is short and daytime: avocado toast, Turkish eggs, ricotta toasts, carrot cake and orange sponge. It holds a Repsol Solete and is open every day from 08:00 to 20:00. The room is casual and a little rustic. It's dog- and vegetarian-friendly, and there's a second Toma café on Calle de Santa Feliciana in Chamberí.

Hola Coffee is a specialty coffee shop on Calle del Doctor Fourquet in Lavapiés, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. It roasts its own beans and keeps a rotating line-up of origins, poured in its own ceramic cups, with only a small counter of bakes: banana bread, cinnamon rolls and sponge cake. The room is tiny, with a few stools rather than tables, so plenty of people take their coffee to go. There's a second café on Calle de Lagasca, a roastery on Calle Pedro Díez and an online shop for beans, equipment and courses. Pablo Caballero and Nolo Botana opened the Doctor Fourquet shop in 2017, according to Time Out. Open daily, from 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, until 20:00.

Naji Specialty Coffee is a small specialty coffee shop on Calle del Cardenal Cisneros, in the Trafalgar corner of Chamberí, founded by Naji Alasil. It made its name on the pistachio latte, and the drinks list runs on through passion fruit, coconut and date lattes alongside straight specialty coffee, matcha and teas. On the sweet side there's lemon pie, pistachio cheesecake and financiers. The room is cosy and intimate, and often busy, so you may have to wait for a seat. It's open every day from 10:00 to 20:00 and is family- and dog-friendly, with Quevedo (L2) as the nearest metro and Bilbao (L1/L4) also close.

Coffee comes first, filter and espresso from trained baristas, with a brunch menu of bagels, toasts and cakes alongside, plus matcha drinks and a red velvet latte. The menu runs to waffles, an okonomiyaki one among them, sesame bagels and Turkish eggs. Devour Tours notes that it pours coffee from roasters such as Barcelona-based Nomad. The room mixes industrial and vintage styles with an Asian touch and has plenty of tables. It opens at 09:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, until 20:00, and a second address, HanSo Café 2, is on Costanilla de los Ángeles near Ópera.

Its own menu covers espresso, cortado, iced latte, espresso tonic and a house filter with refills, plus a hand-brewed Kalita filter and a coffee tasting of espresso, mini filter and mini milk coffee. The food is the bakehouse counter plus brunch: eggs Benedict, French toast, avocado and ricotta toasts and a pastrami sandwich. The room is cosy with an industrial edge, quiet enough to talk or work in, and dog-friendly. The Way to Coffee says it was opened by Nolo and Pablo, the founders of Hola Coffee. It keeps a separate timetable on public holidays, so check its site before a festivo.

Faraday is, in its own words, a record shop, specialty café and boutique of objects, antiques, books and accessories, built around its owners' passions for music, design and coffee. It has been open since 2018. It's on Calle de San Lucas in Justicia, on the Chueca side of Centro. The room is styled like a 1960s home, with original furniture and vinyl always playing, and it's laptop-free, so people come to browse records and talk. The coffee comes from a local roaster, and City Confidential reports that Toma's coffee is served here, with cakes and cookies alongside. The counter runs to carrot cake, cookies and kombucha. Faraday says it holds DJ sessions, the Magnetic Sessions, at weekends. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00, and closed on Mondays.

Dabov Specialty Coffee is the Madrid café of Dabov, a coffee roaster with 14 cafés across five countries: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Spain and Sweden. It's on Calle de Santa Isabel in Lavapiés, near Antón Martín, and it pours the group's own roasts, with several origins to choose from, Gesha lots included. The space is small and built around the bar, better for a quick coffee or takeaway than a long sit. The bar runs to flat whites, cortados and carrot cake. Gastroactivity names Dabov in its February 2026 write-up of a national specialty-café list. Open daily, 08:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and 09:30 to 19:00 at weekends.

#849 of 1606·€·Malasaña·Specialty Coffee

Café Angélica is a fair-trade specialty coffee roaster and café on Calle San Bernardo, on the Malasaña side of Centro. The story starts in 2007, when the founders saw the documentary Black Gold and travelled to Ethiopia to see the trade for themselves. In 2016 they took over a herbs-and-spices shop that had run since 1947 and began roasting there, half a kilo at a time, before moving to a 5kg German Probat and training with Pablo and Nolo of Hola. They stock coffee from eight countries: Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Kenya and Ethiopia, and the origin on offer changes day to day. The room is tiny, with a handful of tables, with toast and carrot cake alongside the coffee. Beans and a subscription are available. Open Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 17:30, closed at weekends.

Cafés Guayacán is a specialty coffee roaster, shop and tasting room on Calle de Fernández de los Ríos in Chamberí. It grew out of more than twenty years the family spent visiting Jardín, a coffee town in Antioquia, Colombia, and it has roasted its own beans in Madrid since 2014. Its list of origin coffees includes names such as Apóstoles (Colombia, Tabi), Kele (Ethiopia, Dega), Pibe (Kenya), Rosalba (Mexico) and Yirga (Ethiopia). It runs coffee tastings and a barista por un día session, so it's closer to a tasting bar than a quick café. Open Thursday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, and closed Monday to Wednesday.

Pan y Pepinillos is a small specialty coffee shop on Calle el Escorial in Malasaña, near Tribunal. It pours single-origin coffee only, never blends, from rotating European and Spanish roasters, as espresso, flat white, cortado, batch brew or V60, and plant milks cost nothing extra. The room is small and Japandi-inspired, and laptops aren't allowed, by design, so it's built for coffee and conversation. Breakfast and brunch run until 15:00, with avocado toast, an ibérico toast, a smoked salmon bagel and a pastrami sandwich, plus banana bread, carrot cake and a cinnamon roll from the bakery list. The menu runs to banana bread, avocado toast and pistachio and matcha lattes. The café says it was selected among The Best Coffee Shops Spain in 2025 and 2026. Alongside come toasts, homemade pastries such as cinnamon rolls, chai and matcha lattes, and a short list of natural wines. Music plays, jazz included, in a room closer to someone's living room than a café counter, which also hosts photobooks, exhibitions and the occasional jazz or DJ night. The coffee shops Scene in Madrid

Madrid's specialty coffee is spread across the city rather than packed into one district. Practical tips

Know before you go

A short survival guide for eating coffee shops in Madrid— everything we wish we’d known on our first trip.

  1. 1

Check the days before you go

Café Angélica is open weekdays only, Cafés Guayacán opens Thursday to Sunday, and Faraday is closed on Mondays. Ōfi Café closes at 14:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and Siniestro Café closes for a midday break.

  2. 2

    Know the laptop rules

Pan y Pepinillos and Faraday are laptop-free by design, and Masamune Coffee allows laptops Monday to Friday only.

  3. 3

    Expect small rooms

Hola Coffee's Lavapiés room has a few stools, Dabov is built around the bar, and at Geisha Specialty Coffee you order and pay at the bar. If you want a longer sit, HanSo Café has plenty of tables and Drømme Kaffe House is roomier than most.

  4. 4

    Take beans home

Hola Coffee, Ruda Café, Dosis Café and Cafés Guayacán sell beans, and Café Angélica also runs a subscription. Ask the barista which origin they'd pour and buy that.

  5. 5

    Ask the baristas

Cafés Guayacán runs coffee tastings and a barista-for-a-day session if you want the coffees explained. If you're new to specialty coffee, start with a flat white or a filter and ask what's on.
