Café Angélica is a fair-trade specialty coffee roaster and café on Calle San Bernardo, in Madrid's Centro. The founders hand-roast on a 5kg German Probat, a habit they picked up in 2016 from a former 1947 herbs-and-spices shop, working beans from eight coffee-growing countries. It's open weekday daytime only.

Background

About Café Angélica

The Story

Café Angélica traces back to 2007, when the founders saw the coffee documentary Black Gold and travelled to Ethiopia to see the trade for themselves. In 2016 they took over a traditional herbs-and-spices shop that had run since 1947 and started roasting fair-trade coffee there, half a kilo at a time, before moving up to an imposing German Probat and training with Pablo and Nolo of Hola Café.

The Cuisine

They hand-roast in-house and stock coffee from eight countries: Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Kenya and Ethiopia, from small producers, women's cooperatives and specific growing valleys. A subscription drops a rotating selection to regulars.

Nearby

Centro is Madrid's historic core, the district that holds Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the long climb of Gran VĂa all at once. The eating is dense and varied, from old-school taverns and chocolaterĂas that have not changed their counters in generations to newer rooms opening along Calle de AlcalĂĄ and San Bernardo. Nearly everything in the city is a walk away from here.
