ChinChín is a late cocktail bar on Calle de Andrés Borrego, on the Malasaña side of Madrid's Centro, carrying a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The room is the talking point: feline décor, sofas and low light, with three bars working flat out when it's busy. Doors open at 19:00 and close at 03:00, or 03:30 on Fridays and Saturdays; closed Mondays.

Background

About ChinChín

The Story

ChinChín opened in spring 2023 as the cocktail bar of Laura Vandall and Edgar Kerri, the couple behind Madrid nightlife names such as Lucky Dragon, Club Malasaña and ChaChá, together with partners including Alex de Lucas, Lola Rodríguez, Edu Por Las Noches and Enrique López Lavigne. It took its cue from the excess of 1930s Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard and from the old private clubs of oak, carpets and heavy glassware that minorities were once kept out of, and set out to bring that classic luxury to Madrid's creative and LGBTIQ+ communities as a safe space. The Guía Repsol gave it a Solete in its autumn 2023 round, listing it under vinotecas.

The Cuisine

A drinks bar first: cocktails, copas, wine and beer, served from three bars when it's busy. The Guía Repsol lists the cuisine as international, but drinks and the room are the focus.

ChinChín Dining Experience

Relaxed and dimly lit, with sofas, tapestries and cat-themed décor. When it fills up, three bars keep the cocktails, copas and beers moving, and the waiters are quick. It's built for a long night: nothing that opens at seven and runs to three in the morning is aiming for an early one.

Getting There

Calle de Andrés Borrego 8, 28004, a short street between Calle del Pez and Calle de la Luna on the Malasaña side of Madrid's Centro district.

Nearby

Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.

Questions

ChinChín FAQ

Does ChinChín have a Guía Repsol Sol?

+

No. ChinChín carries a Solete, the Guía Repsol's everyday-recommendation mark, which is a different thing from a Sol. It isn't in the Michelin Guide.

When is ChinChín open?

+

From 19:00 until 03:00 Tuesday to Thursday and on Sunday, and until 03:30 on Friday and Saturday.

Where is ChinChín?

+

Calle de Andrés Borrego 8, 28004, in Madrid's Centro district.

What kind of bar is ChinChín?

+

A wine-and-cocktail bar: the Guía Repsol lists it under vinotecas and lists the cuisine as international, and cocktails are central. Treat it as a bar built around drinks rather than a dinner menu.

What's ChinChín like inside?

+

Cosy and dim, with sofas, tapestries and a cat theme running through the décor. It's a late bar, busy enough at weekends to run three bars at once.

Does ChinChín have a website?

+

No, its public presence runs through Instagram instead.

Who is behind ChinChín?

+

Laura Vandall and Edgar Kerri, the nightlife couple behind Lucky Dragon, Club Malasaña and ChaChá, with a group of partners. It opened in spring 2023 and earned a Guía Repsol Solete that autumn.

Why is ChinChín decorated with cats?

+

The walls and ceilings are upholstered in a cat-patterned jacquard, part of a 1930s Hollywood-club design by Victoria Solano of Hello Verbena; the bar bills itself as 'cats and cocktails'.
