Tortilla, croquetas and craft beer at Calle del Pez 36 in Malasaña, the original of seven Pez Tortilla sites and holder of a Solete in the Guía Repsol. The house started as three childhood friends who liked bars, lightly-set tortilla and creamy croquetas, and wrote it down on a bar napkin. Lively, walk-in friendly and cheap.

Background

About Pez Tortilla

The Story

Pez Tortilla began, in its own telling, as the classic story of three friends: three childhood mates who liked bars, lightly-set tortilla, creamy croquetas and craft beer, sketching it out on a bar napkin over a few of them. This Calle del Pez room is the original; the group now lists six others, five more in Madrid and one in Valencia.

The Cuisine

Three things, done over and over: potato tortilla on the runny side of set, croquetas made creamy, and craft beer to go with both. The tortilla comes in flavours as well as the classic, with toppings such as brie, parmesan, truffle, basil and sun-dried tomato, and the croquetas run from puchero (cocido) to boletus with truffle. The taps lean on craft beer, IPAs included. It's bar food, and the house doesn't pretend otherwise.

Experience

Lively, cosy and casual, with a bar to stand at and no expectation that you booked. The food style is comfort food and the price feel is good value, which is roughly the whole proposition. It stays open to midnight most nights and to one in the morning Thursday to Saturday.

Getting There

Calle del Pez 36, 28004 Madrid, in Malasaña, Centro district, and the original Pez Tortilla site. Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy: a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late, running down to Gran Vía. Six other Pez Tortilla sites exist, five more in Madrid and one in Valencia.

Nearby

Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.
