Ruda Café is a small specialty coffee shop on Calle Ruda, by the Rastro and La Latina metro, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. Opened in spring about a decade ago as one of La Latina's first specialty cafés, it pours 100% arabica, freshly ground, with a new filter coffee every week, plus teas and homemade cakes such as carrot, violet and a sugar-free cheesecake. The same team runs Trava, its coffee-and-natural-wine sibling on Calle de Calatrava.

Background

About Ruda Café

The Story

Ruda Café opened in spring as, in one early review's words, the first specialty coffee shop in the La Latina neighbourhood, a step from the Rastro. Its site greets visitors with 'Karibu', Swahili for welcome, and sums up the idea simply: coffee done well, freshly ground, with the ratio fine-tuned. After around nine years on Calle Ruda, the team opened Trava on Calle de Calatrava in 2024 as a 'Ruda 2.0' that pairs specialty coffee with natural wine.

The Cuisine

Specialty coffee first: espresso served with a glass of water, americano, coffee with fresh, lactose-free or plant milk, cappuccino with a touch of cinnamon or cocoa, a flat white built on a double ristretto, and a filter coffee that changes weekly, brewed by V60, Aeropress or batch brew. Teas run from Japanese sencha and Lung Ching to pu-erh, Ceylon and Darjeeling, oolongs and white teas, plus chai and matcha lattes.

A small, cosy café with friendly professional baristas, as good for a takeaway flat white as for meeting friends over a slice of cake. Dogs are welcome.

Getting There

Calle Ruda 11, 28005 Madrid, in the heart of the Rastro and next to La Latina metro (line 5), in the Centro district. Sister venue Trava is a few streets away on Calle de Calatrava.

Nearby

Embajadores is old working Madrid, dense and unpolished, and it rewards anyone willing to walk its side streets. The eating runs from taverns that have been there for generations to newer rooms doing something quite different. El Rastro spills through it on market days, and Lavapiés is the same conversation continued uphill.
