Background

About Casa Amadeo Los Caracoles

The Story

Casa Amadeo – Los Caracoles has been on Plaza de Cascorro since 1942. By the founder's own telling, Amadeo arrived in Madrid as a boy in 1940 and started as a taberna apprentice on the square. What began as a pure taberna (wine, aguardiente, a few olives) grew into a kitchen once his mother and sister added raciones, and the caracoles, stewed simply with garlic, parsley and onion, became the draw. His children and grandchildren keep it going today.

The Cuisine

Traditional Spanish cocina de cuchara: caracoles above all, plus callos, oreja, judías viudas, rabo de toro and mejillones a la marinera, with raciones like bacalao, croquetas caseras and calamares a la romana, and homemade arroz con leche and pestiños.

The rooms and the raciones

It's bigger than it looks from the square: two long bars, three dining rooms and a terrace on Plaza de Cascorro. Beyond the caracoles (€14) and callos (€14), the raciones run to battered bacalao, crayfish, zarajos, morcilla de Burgos, croquetas caseras (€9.50), calamares a la romana (€10) and torreznos (€10.50), with rabo de toro at €15.50.
