About Tragaluz

The Story

Tragaluz opened in 1991 during Barcelona's Olympic-era euphoria, becoming the flagship and namesake of Grupo Tragaluz. Founded by Rosa Maria Esteva and her son Tomas Tarruella, who had started with Mordisco in 1987. The interior was designed by Pepe Cortes (FAD Critics' Award 1991), with tableware by Javier Mariscal (the designer of Cobi, the 1992 Olympics mascot) and frescoes by Isabel Esteva. The name means 'skylight' in Spanish, referencing the iconic retractable glass roof. Since 2019, private equity firm Miura Partners holds a majority stake, while Tomas Tarruella retains approximately 33% and leads management. The group now operates 25 restaurants across Barcelona, Madrid and Mallorca.

The Cuisine

Head chef Pol Vitale serves Italian Mediterranean cuisine with housemade fresh pasta, risottos, and carpaccios. Signature dishes include tuna carpaccio with olive oil and Pantelleria capers, pappardelle with oxtail ragu, tagliolini cacio e pepe (with optional black truffle), vitello tonnato, and beef tenderloin Rossini. An oyster and sushi bar operates on the ground floor. A Tragarapid express lunch runs on weekdays. Expect around 50 EUR per person a la carte without drinks.

The Team

Head chef Pol Vitale leads the kitchen with a focus on Italian Mediterranean classics, housemade pasta, risottos and carpaccios. Diners walk through the open kitchen on the way to the dining room, giving an immediate view of the cooks at work.
