Background

About Bar Alegría

The Story

Bar Alegría opened in 1899 on Carrer del Comte Borrell and spent more than a century as a neighbourhood fixture in Sant Antoni. In 2019, restaurateur Tomás Abellán, son of chef Carles Abellán (Tapas 24), reopened the space after a careful restoration, keeping the original bar, marble counter and tilework intact and reviving the building as a working vermuteria, tapas bar and bistró.

The Cuisine

The kitchen works from a short, produce-led carta of tapas and platillos. Signature plates include the truffled omelette (La tortilla trufada del Bar Alegría), the childhood-style bikini with ham and cheese, homemade country pâté with pickles, Cantabrian anchovy gilda, Maresme peas with black butifarra, and a tomato tartare in the Casa Luz style. A selection of natural wines, vermouths and organic soft drinks rounds out the offer.

The Team

The Sant Antoni location is run by restaurateur Tomás Abellán, who reopened the 1899 bar in 2019 with mentorship from his father Carles Abellán (Tapas 24) and Max Colombo (Xemei). The group operates under Grup Alegría and has since added a second location in Gràcia at Torrent de l'Olla 77.

Navigate

Bar Alegría Location & Neighbourhood

Getting There

Bar Alegría sits on Carrer del Comte Borrell 133 in Sant Antoni, on the quieter western edge of the Eixample grid. The area blends modernist residential architecture with a dense cluster of tapas bars, vermuterias, and the restored Mercat de Sant Antoni, giving the neighbourhood a distinctly local, daily-life rhythm.

Nearby

Sant Antoni is a compact barri on the western edge of Eixample, defined by Ildefons Cerdà's gridded plan and centred on the restored Mercat de Sant Antoni. The neighbourhood mixes long-standing vermuterias, bodegas and tapas bars with a newer wave of bakeries, cafés and wine bars, and has kept a distinctly local rhythm despite its central location.
