Zara
Zara is a Cuban-Spanish restaurant on Calle de Barbieri in Chueca, founded in 1964 by Inés and Pepe, Cuban exiles, on nearby Calle de las Infantas. Three generations on, it serves home-style Cuban dishes with a Spanish touch: ropa vieja, picadillo, yuca frita and its daiquiris, from recipes created by Inés and reworked by her daughter. It's open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.
Background
About Zara
The Story
The tradition goes back to El León de Oro, a bakery-patisserie in old Havana that belonged to the parents of Inés Llanos Braña, Asturian emigrants. In the 1960s Inés and her husband Pepe, exiled from Cuba, opened a Spanish place with Cuban touches on Calle de las Infantas with her brother Santiago and his wife Mariuca, and worked there for 50 years until a rent-law change forced them out. Their daughter Inés and her husband Jorge then reopened a few blocks away on Calle de Barbieri.
The Cuisine
Home-style Cuban dishes with a Spanish touch and Spanish produce: ropa vieja, picadillo, yuca frita, tropical plates and typical starters, plus the daiquiris that have been on the list since 1964, wines and desserts.

Small and discreet, with chequered tablecloths and white crockery, wood, indirect light and a bit of a cave feel, the kind of room where you can talk openly. It closes for a summer break from late July to the end of August.

Zara is on Calle de Barbieri 8 in Chueca, a few blocks from its original home on Calle de las Infantas.
Nearby
Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
