Background

About Sr. Ito

The Story

Sr. Ito grew out of Samurai, the Japanese restaurant on the Cuesta de Santo Domingo. When its owner, Mr. Ito, went back to Japan for family reasons, Iban González, Samurai's manager for its last ten years, longtime staffer Leyre Velasco and regular Marino Cid decided the team and its know-how shouldn't scatter. They named the new place after him as a tribute, with a pun Iban came up with. There are now two: this one on Calle de Pelayo and another on Calle de Trafalgar 7.

The Cuisine

The kitchen is modern Japanese, spanning sushi and sashimi, tuna and prawn tartares, gyozas, tempura and baos, with cocktails to start.

The wall at the door

The entrance doubles as a small gallery. Its mural is curated by art critic Mateo Feijóo, who invites a new artist every three months to repaint the wall.

From the carta

It starts with Sr. Ito's special edamame (€8) and house cocktails: sake mojito €9.50, pisco sour €9.90, a vermouth with Japanese gin €6.50. Raw dishes include a 20-cut sea bream sashimi with citrus and truffle (€21.90), toro sashimi (€24.90) and tuna tartare with egg yolk (€22.50). The fusion side brings a corvina tiradito with ají amarillo, a japo-taco of salmon tartare and smoked eel (€7.50) and gyozas of oxtail, butifarra or shiitake with black truffle (€14 for four). Hot plates run to kabocha korokke with pork and Japanese curry, hotate butter scallops and a soft-shell crab tempura (€23).

Getting There

It sits on Calle de Pelayo in the Justicia neighbourhood, in Madrid's Centro district.

Nearby

Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
