Taberna Ángel Sierra is a traditional Madrid taberna on Calle de Gravina, on the Chueca side of the centre, founded as a bodega in 1908 and bought by Ángel Sierra in 1917. Vermouth on tap is what it's for, poured at a tin-and-wood bar under Sevillian tiles and old oak barrels, with gildas, pickles, canapés and conservas to go with it. Background

About Taberna de Angel Sierra

The Story

Taberna Ángel Sierra was founded in 1908 as a traditional bodega in Chueca and bought in 1917 by Ángel Sierra, whose name it still carries. The house has kept the original decoration: a tin-and-wood bar, tiles from La Cartuja de Sevilla and century-old oak barrels.

The Cuisine

A traditional Madrid taberna and vermutería. Vermut de grifo, vermouth poured from the tap, is the house drink, alongside draught beer, cider and wines by the glass. The carta is small bites: gildas, stuffed olives, banderillas and Almagro aubergines, empanadas, canapés and montados, and tins of conservas from mussels in escabeche to Ría cockles and anchovies.

Getting There

Taberna Ángel Sierra is at Calle de Gravina 11, in the Justicia barrio on the Chueca side of central Madrid, by Chueca metro (L5).

Nearby

Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
