Okashi is a Japanese restaurant on Calle de San Vicente Ferrer in Malasaña, holding a Solete in the Guía Repsol. It opened in 2008 to bring traditional Japanese flavours beyond sushi to Spain, then became what it calls the first certified 100% gluten-free and lactose-free Japanese restaurant, and since 2021 has been adapting most dishes for vegans. Everything is made by hand: a nine-hour tonkotsu ramen on rice noodles, donburi, Japanese curry, korokke and gyozas.

Background

About Okashi Malasaña

The Story

Okashi was born in 2008 to bring the traditional flavours of Japan to Spain at a time when sushi was about all anyone knew of Japanese food. The team soon set itself a new goal, Japan for everyone whatever their dietary restrictions, and became a certified 100% gluten-free and lactose-free Japanese restaurant. Since 2021 it has been reformulating recipes so that most dishes can be made vegan. There's a sister Okashi on Calle Salitre in Lavapiés.

The Cuisine

Japanese home cooking rather than sushi, everything handmade and free of gluten and lactose. Noodles are rice-based, and most dishes have a vegan or vegetarian version; the menu flags allergens such as soy, egg and sesame dish by dish.

The Carta

Starters include wakame salad, spicy sautéed edamame, tori no karaage, double-fried tebasaki wings, Kanto-style takoyaki (€9.75), korokke croquettes of imported Japanese kabocha squash or potato with beef and shiitake (€11.95), and handmade pork or kimchi gyozas. The mains are around €14 to €16: the tonkotsu ramen, simmered for nine hours with pork, chicken and vegetables and seasoned shio or shoyu; a spicy miso ramen on a plant-based broth; donburi such as katsudon, oyakodon, yakitoridon, negitama gyudon and tanindon; tonkatsu; Japanese curry and katsu curry; and a gluten-free yakisoba. Egg dishes can be made with pasteurised egg so they're suitable in pregnancy.

Booking and Hours

Book online through the Okashi website or by WhatsApp; bookings aren't taken by email or social media and are released after 15 minutes. The Malasaña restaurant closes Monday and Tuesday, opens for dinner on Wednesday and Thursday, and adds lunch from Friday to Sunday; the kitchen closes 75 minutes before the doors. The website currently says the team is moving, so check the address and hours on its site or Instagram before you go.

Getting There

It's on Calle de San Vicente Ferrer in Malasana, in the Centro district, one of central Madrid's busiest nightlife and eating quarters.

Nearby

Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.
