Los Chuchis is a small, colourful bar on Calle del Amparo, a short walk from Plaza de Lavapiés, run by English chef Scott Preston with partners Fer Lasala and Paloma Martín Mateos. They describe it as homemade cooking with an English touch, with Italian and Mediterranean nods: potato skins with sour cream, homemade pâté, shepherd's pie, English sausages with mustard and a slow-roasted pork with caramelised apple and gravy. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol and is known for its menú del día.

Background

About Los Chuchis

The Story

Los Chuchis was set up by three old friends, Fer Lasala, Paloma Martín Mateos and English chef Scott Preston, and named after the affectionate nickname they use for one another. Preston, who worked in London restaurants such as Joe Allen and Orso, came with the idea of bringing homemade British cooking to a Madrid where English food was barely represented. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol, and chef Mario Sandoval of Coque has named it one of his favourite Soletes, singling out the menú del día and the bouillabaisse.

The Cuisine

Homemade cooking with an English touch, Italian influences and the odd exotic seasoning, changing daily with the market. Fixtures include English sausages with mustard, baked camembert with roast garlic, potato skins with spicy sauce and sour cream, homemade pâté and the potato, cod and prawn balls with coriander and chilli that stand in for fish and chips.

What to Order

At lunch there's a menú del día with a choice of starters and mains, and a half-menu option. In the evening, order from the list of plates to share. The house's best-known dish is the slow-roasted pork, cooked for around five hours in the English way and served with caramelised apple and gravy; the Guía Repsol also recommends the potato skins with sour cream, the pâté, the shepherd's pie and the roasts. Puddings are homemade, from cakes to English classics such as a lemon 'London brick' sponge and a sponge with custard.

Hours

Los Chuchis opens Wednesday to Saturday from 13:30 to midnight and Sunday from 13:30 to 18:00, and closes Monday and Tuesday; the kitchen keeps shorter hours within those. Book on 911 27 66 06.

Experience

Los Chuchis Dining Experience

A few tables, a classic old Madrid bar counter, the only survivor of the previous business, and walls full of 'treasures' the three friends picked up at London's second-hand markets. It's friendly and down to earth, a neighbourhood bar that fills up, so book. Vegetarian and coeliac options are available.

Getting There

Calle del Amparo 82, a few metres from Plaza de Lavapiés, in the Embajadores area of Madrid's Centro district.

Nearby

Lavapiés is a steeply layered corner of central Madrid, a tight grid of narrow streets where the cooking comes from everywhere at once. The rooms are small, the prices are honest, and the good ones fill with regulars rather than reservations. Museo Reina Sofía and CaixaForum Madrid sit uphill from it, El Rastro at the bottom.
