Background

About La Tasca Suprema

The Story

La Tasca Suprema opened in 1890, like many taverns of its day, as a home from home serving real home cooking. Its name comes from its nearness to the Tribunal Supremo, and the house says that drew politicians and journalists to its tables. The signage uses a diamond-shaped design, and the house still serves a caramelised torrija it dates to 1890.

The Cuisine

Cocina tradicional madrileña, 'una cocina de toda la vida', slow-cooked and with plenty of Navarra produce: callos, cocido, rabo de toro, pisto with egg, pochas de la Ribera, menestra and stuffed piquillo peppers.

The Carta

Start the taberneo way with Cantabrian anchovies, boquerones in vinegar, a gilda, Ibérico bellota ham or León cecina with toasted almonds. To share there are Ibérico ham croquetas (€9/€13), ensaladilla suprema, confit artichokes, Tudela tomato with ventresca, migas bardeneras with a free-range egg and homemade meatballs. Stews include pisto navarro with egg (€14), pochas de la Ribera, callos a la madrileña (€12/€20), rabo de toro (€23) and Ibérico cheek with sweet potato. From the fish and meat: hake battered or grilled (€25), baked salt cod in tomato, squid in its ink, suckling-lamb chops and a roast beef entrecôte. Desserts: the 1890 torrija, cheesecake, tarta de la abuela and a cosaco of coffee, vanilla ice cream and whisky.

Stew of the Day and the Vegetable Menu

Each weekday has its guiso, with homemade dessert or coffee included: pochas navarras with piparras on Monday (€14), stewed meatballs on Tuesday, lentils with chorizo and smoked pancetta on Wednesday, menestra of vegetables on Thursday (€15) and pisto manchego with egg on Friday (€11). The vegetable menu, La Huerta, is €30 per person: Tudela tomato and confit artichokes to share, then pochas, baked cod, Ibérico cheek or pisto, with cheesecake, bread and coffee. There's a vegan option on request.

Wine

Wines by the glass start at €4.30–4.80: Verdejo, Albariño, a Rioja crianza, Harveys fino and oloroso, and the semi-sweet Ha Pasado un Ángel. Bottles run from Príncipe de Viana from Navarra and José Pariente Verdejo to Pazo de San Mauro Albariño, with Ayala and Moët Champagne.

Experience

La Tasca Suprema Dining Experience

Two rustic, cosy dining rooms with rough grey stone and old exposed brick, and a bar for tapas with friends or family. It's relaxed and lively, and gets loud when full, so it isn't the place for a quiet talk.

Getting There

At Calle Argensola 7, in Las Salesas, the Justicia barrio of Centro, near the Tribunal Supremo. Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, narrow streets and small shopfronts.

Nearby

Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
