The Story
La Biblioteca sits in the original library of the Marquis of Santo Mauro, now part of the hotel that carries his name, kept and adapted as an intimate room with the books still in place. In warm weather it moves to one of the best gardens in Madrid. It's listed in the Guía Repsol.
The Cuisine
Signature cooking that draws on classic French inspiration, built on excellent product and seasonal changes, in Rafa Peña's hands. It runs as a tasting experience with a couple of menus.
The Marquis's Library
La Biblioteca occupies the original library of the Marquis of Santo Mauro, with the books still on the shelves, kept and adapted as a cosy, intimate room. The idea is to bring the great receptions of nineteenth-century noble houses to each table, and the frankly French style of the cooking carries into the interior, slightly ornate but never overdone. When the weather turns, the experience moves into one of Madrid's best gardens, where a secret table hidden among the plants can be booked for meetings or celebrations.
A New Chapter
The carta has been rewritten from scratch in a new chapter, still under the Gresca kitchen: inspired by classic Paris but in Peña's own voice, an aesthetic simplicity set against precise technique, cooking points, product and sauces. Two tasting menus showcase his most elaborate dishes with seasonal changes, seven courses at €140 and eleven at €180 per person, with the wine pairing as a supplement. Peña's cooking elsewhere is known for its bright acidity and properly built meat sauces.

The Team
The cooking is by Barcelona chef Rafa Peña, of Gresca, who has consulted on the kitchen at Hotel Santo Mauro since 2021. He studied maths and computing before cooking, trained at Neichel, staged at elBulli and Martín Berasategui, worked in Paris and Stockholm, and opened Gresca in Barcelona in 2006 with his wife Mireia Navarro. In 2023 he received the Premi Nacional de Gastronomia from the Acadèmia Catalana de Gastronomia i Nutrició.
