Background
About Narciso
The Story
Narciso is the brasserie of chef Mario Valles, the cook and owner behind Hortensio, and it opened on Calle Almagro at the end of 2016. From the start it was pitched as a European brasserie in a Belle Époque, art-deco setting, classic in spirit but informal, and its terrace became one of the neighbourhood's social addresses. It trades as Narciso Brasserie and is listed in the Guía Repsol.
The Cuisine
French brasserie cooking, from lighter plates like tomate y ventresca and burrata pugliese to fish and meat mains and a lenguado meunière for two. It trades as Narciso Brasserie.
The Carta
The carta is split by origin. From the garden: tomato with bonito belly, burrata with tricolour cherry tomatoes and pesto, an ensaladilla with grilled bonito, aubergine with black garlic and ají dulce, and grilled leeks (€15 to €18). From the spoon: a seafood cream and salmorejo. From the sea: a prawn carpaccio with coconut and lemongrass, corvina ceviche with lemon sorbet, mussels Thai-style or in white wine, and salmon and avocado tartare. 'From here' brings ham croquetas, rice morcilla with roast pepper, bellota ham and mushrooms with a mollet egg; 'from over there' brings tequeños with cane honey and rum, vitello tonnato, pear ravioli with blue cheese, tagliolini carbonara and crisp tacos. Mains are the brasserie classics: salmon with asparagus in beurre blanc, a sole meunière for two (€62), tuna tataki, sea bass with celeriac, a seafood caldoso rice, chipirones in their ink, poussin, duck magret and duck confit with potato gratin, Austrian beef sirloin with Café de Paris sauce, aged beef loin with béarnaise and steak tartare (€19 to €29). Desserts at €9 include cheesecake, lemon pie and tarte Tatin, with Italian-style ice creams at €7.
Cocktails and Delivery
Cocktails are part of the draw, with their own list, and the terrace carries a 10% supplement. Bread and service are €3 a head. The restaurant runs its own home-delivery service with in-house staff and compostable sugar-cane packaging, taking orders from Monday to Saturday and on Sunday lunchtimes.
