Rafa Peña is a Barcelona-born self-taught chef who opened Gresca on Carrer de Provença in 2006 with his wife Mireia Navarro. The restaurant carries two Repsol Soles for product-led contemporary cooking marked by sharp acidity and elegant meat sauces. He also runs the late-night Bar Torpedo on Aribau.

Biography

Early years

Born in Barcelona in 1976, Peña did not attend cooking school — he trained himself inside good kitchens. In 1997 he started as an apprentice at Neichel, then a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Barcelona.

Career

Peña did seasonal stages at elBulli (1999) and at Martín Berasategui (2000), then worked as chef de partie at Pierre au Palais Royal in Paris for two years and as sous-chef at Rolfs Kök in Stockholm. In 2006 he opened Gresca on Carrer de Provença in Barcelona with his wife Mireia Navarro — a bistro that has long been a favourite of local critics for its contemporary, product-driven cooking. Gresca holds two Repsol Soles. He also runs Bar Torpedo on Carrer d'Aribau, a late-night natural-wine and gourmet sandwich project.

Philosophy

Peña's cooking is grounded in seasonality and product. Critics consistently single out two technical signatures: an acidity profile that runs through the menu, and meat sauces that he 'embroiders' with elegance. The Gresca format is intentionally low-fuss — a bistro where the work happens with the ingredient rather than around it.

Accolades

  • ·2 Repsol Soles at Gresca
  • ·Apprenticeship at Neichel (then 2 Michelin stars)
  • ·Stages at elBulli (1999) and Martín Berasategui (2000)
