Background
About La Barraca
The Story
La Barraca opened in 1935, when the Solís family brought a piece of their Valencian homeland to the Gran Vía area, and three generations later it is still a family house of classic, popular Spanish cooking with rice at the centre. The founder, Eduardo de Solís, described paella as a ritual handed down through generations, a symbol of popular and family celebration, and that idea still frames the restaurant.
The Cuisine
Valencian rice and paellas in the traditional style, built on bomba rice with DO Valencia.
The Rices
All the rices are made for two or more and priced per person, and the house rice is bomba with DO Valencia. The list runs well past the paella valenciana (rabbit, chicken, green beans, garrofó and rosemary): there's a paella mixta, a vegetable arroz huertana, arroz al horno with cocido, boletus with Ibérico ham, duck with mushrooms, and chicken with wild asparagus and truffle. The arroz campero comes 'todo limpio', with pork loin, chicken, bacon and chorizo, and the seafood side includes paella marinera, a paella Reina with cigalas and carabineros, a fully peeled arroz del senyoret, arroz a banda, black rice with squid, a Maresme-style caldoso, and two fideuàs.
Starters, Desserts and Wine
Before the rice there's desgarrat (roast peppers with salt cod), salt-cod buñuelos, stuffed mussels La Barraca, callos a la madrileña, grilled octopus on patatas revolconas, ham croquetas and gazpacho, with a few non-rice mains such as stuffed squid in their ink and lamb chops. Desserts include San Isidro buñuelos filled with cream, crema catalana, homemade flan and a soufflé Alaska that has to be ordered for at least four when you order your meal. The wine list is short and Spanish, from Rías Baixas albariño to Ribera and Rioja crianzas and Corpinnat sparkling, and there's sangria by the jug.
The Rooms
The house is split into several rooms. La Primitiva Barraca, the large main dining room, has kept its Valencian decoration since 1935; the Sala del Espejo has small tables, El Tranvía is a long room with traditional Valencian decor, and there are private spaces for groups: El Rincón de la Reina (9 to 11 people), El Patio (7 to 8) and La Cueva (up to 40). Group menus for 2026 run from €50 (vegetarian) to €66 per person, including starters, two rices, dessert, house drinks and coffee.
