Haranita bills itself as dumplings and bubbles by Gran Vía, and that's the deal: bao and siu mai share the carta with ceviche, a corvina tiradito, a katsu slider and Korean-BBQ wings, and the drinks lean on champagne, crémant and pear cider. The bao are a signature. It's on Calle de Víctor Hugo in Justicia, holds a Repsol Solete, and closes Sunday and Monday.

Background

About Haranita

The Story

Haranita describes itself in a line: dumplings and bubbles, by Gran Vía. It opened at the start of 2023 as the new project of the partners behind Nakeima, the Madrid bar known for its dumplings and bao, with a young ex-Nakeima cook everyone calls Fer running the kitchen, and several dishes came over from the parent. The house tag is 'mandanga fina'. It's a small, dim, two-level room on Calle de Víctor Hugo, and it holds a Repsol Solete.

The Cuisine

Dumplings and bao are the core: a house siu mai with pork jowl and puffed rice, a black bao of cuttlefish and black-garlic alioli, a cochinita pibil bao and a beef 'asador' bao. Around them sit Latin-leaning cold plates, a salmon ceviche with ají amarillo and a corvina tiradito, plus a katsu slider, Korean-BBQ wings and a sweet egg-yolk bao for dessert. The drinks lean to bubbles: crémant, champagne and a Normandy pear cider.

Getting There

Haranita is on Calle de Víctor Hugo 5, a short side street just off Gran Vía on the Chueca side, with Gran Vía (Lines 1 and 5), Chueca (Line 5) and Sevilla (Line 2) the nearest metro stations.

Nearby

Justicia is the quieter, better-dressed half of the Chueca side of town, all narrow streets and small shopfronts. Mercado de San Antón anchors the eating, and around it sit grill rooms, wine bars and places that fill late. It is central without ever feeling like the centre.
