Casa Brava is the Madrid branch of a bar that opened in Rosario, Argentina, in 2018. Sofía Estévez and her partner Bando, its cook, opened it in November 2023 in the old Bar Corazón at the top of Calle Valverde. It serves refined Río de la Plata comfort food, from osobuco empanadas to ricotta gnocchi, with Negronis and Argentine amaro, and live music every night with no cover.

Background

About Casa Brava

The Story

Sofía Estévez and Bando, her partner and the cook, left the first Casa Brava on Calle Pichincha in Rosario, open since 2018, and moved to Madrid in 2020 looking for a place with one non-negotiable: room for a stage, because 'the soul of the place is the stage'. They found it in the former Bar Corazón, and opened in November 2023. The room keeps the old bar's light, its wooden counter brought over from Ireland when it was an Irish pub, and its marble tables, with the stage as the big change. In May 2024 Fito Páez dropped in with friends from Rosario and played a surprise set of an hour and more at the piano, and Argentine musicians and actors passing through Madrid have made it a regular stop.

The Cuisine

Simple Río de la Plata cooking made special. Bando's carta has included osobuco empanadas with lemon and llajua, crispy polenta with basil mayonnaise, lamb meatballs with yogurt and mint chimichurri, ricotta gnocchi with asparagus, parmesan, pangrattato and lemon, confit potatoes with chilli oil and chives, and a beef milanesa. Behind the old wooden bar, Negronis are a house star, alongside Amargo Obrero, vermouth and modern cocktails.

Music Every Night

Free live music every night is the bar's signature, programmed with the producers who run the Rosario Casa Brava, followed by DJ sets and dancing as the night goes on. It opens at 19:00 from Wednesday to Sunday and runs until 02:00 midweek and on Sundays and 03:00 to 03:30 Thursday to Saturday; it's closed Monday and Tuesday.

A House, Not Just a Bar

Both bars were conceived as a 'casa', and regulars treat it that way, returning every week. A sign at the entrance promises that 'something wonderful is happening'. It isn't a bar only for Argentines, the founders say, though Madrid's large Argentine community and touring bands keep it full. Follow @casa.brava.madrid for the week's line-up; the bar's own website is still under construction.

The Team

Founded by Sofía Estévez; her partner Bando runs the kitchen, and Rosario's music producers Facu and Joaquín help programme the live acts.

Warm, crowded and late, with an old-bar feel of wood and marble, a piano and a stage. It works for dinner and a show with friends or a date, and turns into a party after midnight.

Getting There

Calle de Valverde 44, at the top of the street where Malasaña meets Justicia, near the Mercado de San Antón; Tribunal is the nearest metro station.

Nearby

Universidad is the student-facing edge of the centre, young and busy and cheap in places, ambitious in others. The eating shifts block by block, from taverns pouring vermut to kitchens doing genuinely contemporary cooking. It runs into Malasaña and Gran Vía, and the mood changes with it.
