La Bicicleta
La Bicicleta
La Bicicleta opened on Plaza de San Ildefonso in Malasaña in the early 2010s as a cycling café and workplace, the idea of graphic designer and urban cyclist Quique Arias and his business partner Tamara Marqués, who wanted to combine good coffee, cafés as places to work and the bicycle. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. By day it's a bright, laptop-friendly café with plugs everywhere, specialty coffee, tostas and brunch; by night it pours natural wines, craft beer and cocktails, running late on Friday and Saturday. The space, it says, was an after-hours club in the 1980s.

Background
About La Bicicleta
The Story
Quique Arias, a graphic designer who spent long hours working from cafés, wanted to bring together three passions: coffee, the bicycle and cafés as workplaces. Inspired in part by a similar project a friend described in Riga, and back in the Madrid he grew up in after years abroad, he opened La Bicicleta with Tamara Marqués on Plaza de San Ildefonso, in a space the café says was an after-hours club in the 1980s. It was conceived as a platform for urban cycling too, with a corner for quick bike repairs and a programme of exhibitions, talks and weekly rides, and as a workplace with unlimited wifi and plugs. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.
The Cuisine
Café and brunch food, with specialty coffee at its core: tostas, eggs Benedict and seasonal dishes by day, natural wines, craft beer and cocktails later. Its coffee is also sold online for home delivery.

La Bicicleta Dining Experience
Bright and warm, with lots of natural light, an open-plan room and mismatched furniture inspired by Berlin cafés. The crowd is a cross-section of Malasaña: freelancers at the work tables, first dates, friends over gin and tonics and weekend brunchers. You order at the counter.

Nearby
Malasaña is where the city keeps its energy, a tight web of streets that turns over fast and stays up late. The eating is young and restless, with vegan kitchens, coffee bars and creative rooms wedged between places that have not changed in decades. It runs down to Gran Vía, and it rewards walking without a plan.
