Background
About BASMATI
The Story
Basmati is an Indian restaurant on Calle de Sandoval that cooks to halal standards and follows Islamic dietary law throughout. That also shapes the drinks: the house doesn't serve alcohol on the premises, though it lets diners bring their own to a sit-down meal.
The Cuisine
North Indian cooking: samosas, onion bhaji, pakoras and daal soup to start, then curries such as chicken tikka masala, jalfrezi, prawn masala and butter chicken, beef, lamb or prawns, plus biryanis, tandoori dishes and a broad vegetarian selection. Spice levels run from mild to hot.
The Menu
Starters are mostly €4.50–5.95: cheese rolls, chicken or vegetable samosas, onion bhaji, chicken and vegetable pakoras and a mild daal soup, or a mixed starter of all of them for €15.50. Among the recommended dishes, chicken tikka masala with cream and almonds, chicken jalfrezi with peppers and chilli and butter chicken are €14.95, prawn masala €16.95, and the butter sauce also comes with beef, lamb or prawns. The rest of the carta covers biryanis, tandoori specialities, breads and a long vegetarian list.
Halal, and Bring Your Own
Every dish is prepared to halal standards. Because the house doesn't sell alcohol, diners who want wine or beer with dinner can bring their own. In summer there's a terrace, and tables can be booked online through the restaurant's website, where you can also leave special requests.

It's on Calle de Sandoval in the Trafalgar area of Madrid's Chamberi district.
Nearby
Trafalgar is the calm shoulder between Malasaña and the wider avenues, residential enough to feel lived-in and central enough to walk out of. The eating skews to neighbourhood favourites and small confident kitchens rather than destinations. It gets quieter, and better value, the further you go from Gran Vía.
