Background

About Baiyor

The Story

Baiyor was opened by a Thai family who wanted to share the food they grew up with. It sits in the middle of Malasaña, in a warm room built around dark wood.

The Cuisine

Every dish uses authentic Thai ingredients and is made to order, so it tastes, in the owners' words, exactly like it does in Thailand.

The Tasting Menu

The quickest way through the kitchen is the tasting menu at €29.50 a head, VAT included, which brings every dish to the table. Starters: kai satay chicken skewers in coconut milk and peanut sauce, poh pia spring rolls, kanom jeeb steamed rice-pasta dumplings of prawn and pork, tung thong crisp parcels of mushroom, chicken and celery, and fresh rice-paper rolls with prawns. Then pad thai with chicken, a crispy duck salad with red onion and chili paste, green curry with prawn tails, chicken stir-fried with pineapple and cashews and jasmine rice, finishing with a Thai roti crêpe with banana and Nutella.

Practical Details

The carta adds soups like tom yam khung, prawn pad thai and curries of chicken and duck, and there's a takeaway and delivery service; the restaurant asks for delivery orders at least two hours ahead. The nearest metro is San Bernardo (lines 2 and 4), and there's a public car park on Calle Fuencarral 101.

Getting There

It's on Calle de Manuela Malasaña, in the Malasaña area (barrio Universidad) of central Madrid.

Nearby

Universidad is the student-facing edge of the centre, young and busy and cheap in places, ambitious in others. The eating shifts block by block, from taverns pouring vermut to kitchens doing genuinely contemporary cooking. It runs into Malasaña and Gran Vía, and the mood changes with it.
