Background
About El Passadís del Pep
The Story
El Passadís del Pep has occupied the same corridor at Pla de Palau for almost 40 years, no sign outside, no menu on the table, no concession to trends. Owner Joan Manubens inherited the concept from his father: 'sit down and relax, I already know what you'll want to eat.' The kitchen's premise is simply to get the best product in Barcelona each morning and serve it with as little intervention as possible. After four decades, the regulars are no longer clients, as Manubens puts it, they are friends.
The Cuisine
A no-menu seafood and fish kitchen built entirely around daily product. Waiters announce the dishes and adapt preparations to each table, there is no printed card. The product is fresh, seasonal, and local: whatever arrived that morning is what the kitchen serves. Shellfish, grilled fish, rice dishes, and traditional Catalan seafood preparations are the pillars. The wine list is selective and personally guided. Private dining rooms (privados) available.
The Team
El Passadís del Pep is owned and directed by Joan Manubens, who runs it with the same philosophy his father brought to the passadís decades ago. The kitchen team is not individually profiled, the restaurant's identity is the product and the host relationship, not individual chefs.
