Background

About Els Pescadors

The Story

Els Pescadors opened in spring 1980 when founders Toia Duran and Pep Maulini transformed a 1913 tavern on Placa de Prim into a gathering spot for Poblenou's artistic and cultural community. Under longtime manager Pep Salsetes, the restaurant expanded its gastronomic reputation through the 1992 Olympic era, becoming one of Barcelona's definitive seafood addresses. Today the second generation leads: Marc Maulini Duran took over as managing director in 2019, continuing four decades of family commitment to seasonal produce and Catalan culinary tradition. The space itself is split between an atmospheric zone styled after the original fishermen's tavern and a more contemporary dining room renovated during the Olympic period. The terrace on Placa de Prim is one of the most coveted outdoor dining spots in Barcelona.

The Cuisine

The kitchen at Els Pescadors is devoted to fresh seasonal Mediterranean seafood, sourced daily from Catalan fish markets and local producers. Rice dishes are a particular strength, the arroz caldoso, seafood paella, and fideuà are among Barcelona's best. Fresh whole fish from the lonjas of La Rapita, Roses, and Tarragona are prepared simply on the grill or baked in salt, letting pristine ingredients speak for themselves. Traditional Catalan preparations like suquet, cod five ways, and espardenyes share the menu with seasonal vegetables from Baix Llobregat and meats from Pallars Jussa. The restaurant holds Cuina Catalana certification, affirming its commitment to authentic regional cooking.

The Team

Head chef Xavi Llanta has led the kitchen since 2019, bringing technique and creativity while respecting the restaurant's four-decade tradition of seafood excellence. He is supported by sous chef Abdou Seye (since 2016) and chefs Dora Lino and Chaeib Redouane, who has been with the restaurant since 2005. Owner and managing director Marc Maulini Duran represents the second generation of the founding family, with his father Josep Maria (Pep) Maulini having led the project since its 1980 opening.

Experience

Els Pescadors Dining Experience

A dual-personality space: one zone recreates the warmth of the original 1913 fishermen's tavern with rustic maritime character, while a second dining room offers a more contemporary feel from the 1992 Olympic-era renovation. The jewel is the terrace on Placa de Prim, a quiet, leafy square that ranks among Barcelona's most romantic outdoor dining settings.
