Background

About Lima Nikkei

The Story

Lima Nikkei opened in June 2023 on Calle de Rosario Pino, near Plaza de Castilla, as the Spanish adaptation of Embarcadero 41, a Peruvian group with more than twenty restaurants in Peru, Ecuador, Chile and the United States, and Madrid is its first opening in Europe. Founding partner and director Ernesto Ascenzo runs the project. Nikkei is the name for Japanese emigrants and their descendants; in Peru, where they arrived at the end of the 19th century, their technique met ají, lime and Pacific fish, and a cuisine of its own was born. It's listed in the Guía Repsol for 2026.

The Cuisine

Nikkei, with the accent on seafood, cooked to order. The kitchen works with Balfegó tuna, wild corvina, Gillardeau no. 2 oysters and Japanese products from the importer Cominport, and the pisco is Sarcay from Peru. The carta is long but tidy, in eleven sections: nigiri, gunkan, hand rolls, sashimi, cold starters, oysters, hot starters, makis, ceviches and tiraditos, mains and desserts, with vegan options.

What to Order

Nigiri come in pairs and are flamed to order, such as the acevichado of sea bass with chalaquita and crisp sweet potato, tuna with smoked ají amarillo, a truffled scallop, and A5 wagyu flamed in anticuchera sauce. The maki acevichado, with furai prawn, cream cheese and avocado topped with bluefin and acevichada sauce, is one of the most ordered. From the hot side there's anticuchero octopus, a two-time yakimeshi with prawns and char siu belly, lomo saltado from the wok, udon a la huancaína with lomo saltado, and the 48-hour chanchito nikkei, and in winter a hot ceviche in smoked-ají misoshiro. Nigiri run about €9 to €11 a pair and mains €20 to €26.

Pisco and More

The bar pours six or seven pisco sours, classic, chicha morada, passion fruit, red berries, cucumber and spicy mango among them, plus five chilcanos, all on Sarcay pisco. Without alcohol there's chicha morada, maracucoco and passion fruit juice, and the wine list covers Spanish and French sparklers and fresh reds that suit the food. Five shared dishes have been costed at about €45 a head in food alone.
