Hakuna Matata Veggie is a fully plant-based restaurant on Calle Galileo, in Chamberí, run by Javi and Yasmine, who opened it in Tetuán in January 2018 and moved here in February 2020. The cooking is homemade, traditional and international, and much of the carta plays with familiar dishes: shiitake chopitos, Andalusian-style 'calamares', a tuna-style tartare, a vegan cachopo asturiano, a 'plantrecote' and stewed 'carrilleras'. There's a terrace, and groups and dogs are welcome.

Background

About Hakuna Matata Veggie

The Story

The Hakuna was Javi's dream from his days at hospitality school in 2008. He and Yasmine met in 2012 and opened the restaurant in January 2018 in Tetuán, in a modest space that people were slow to try but came back to for the home cooking and care. At the end of February 2020 they moved to Calle Galileo in Chamberí, where Cris, their maître, joined the project, just before the pandemic hit.

The Cuisine

The food is 100% vegetal, spanning traditional, homemade and international dishes, so classic tastes made entirely without animal products.

'I Swear These Aren't Fish'

The carta has a sense of humour. The section 'Te juro que esto no son peces' brings shiitake chopitos with aioli, ensaladilla with vegetable prawns al ajillo, Andalusian-style 'calamares' with wasabi mayonnaise and a tuna-style tartare. The one that follows, '…y que esto tampoco son animales', runs to a lion's-mane mushroom fillet, a 'plantrecote' of soy and konjac, a cachopo asturiano stuffed with piquillo and cashew blue cheese (€18.90), and 'carrilleras' stewed in Rioja.

Starters, Rice and Burgers

To start: the chef's croquetas (€11.90), confit artichokes with boletus on hazelnut romesco, an artisan vegan cheese board, tempura aubergine with cane honey and hummus, a Moroccan pastela of Heura and almonds, handmade bravas with padrón peppers, morcilla with goat-style cheese, and plantain tostones with avocado and 'prawn'. There are Caesar, avocado-tartare and Greek salads, a lentil-and-shiitake burger and a Heura smash burger, and rice and pasta from an artichoke-and-mushroom fideuà to a boletus risotto and mushroom-truffle ravioli.
