Background

About Dong Feng

The Story

Dong Feng is a Chinese restaurant on Calle Ibiza, a few streets from the Retiro, with its own bilingual website, online booking, home delivery and space for celebrations.

The Cuisine

Chinese with pan-Asian touches: soups, dim sum-style dumplings, prawns, chicken, pork, beef and duck dishes from the wok and oven, fried rice and noodles, plus Thai curries and pad thai.

The Carta

Soups cost about €5: chicken and mushroom, corn and crab, hot and sour, miso and wonton. Starters include assorted steamed dumplings, grilled Chinese dumplings, Vietnamese rolls, prawn rolls and steamed ha gow. The prawns come gan shao-style, kung pao or with salt and Sichuan pepper (€11.90–12.50); chicken ranges from kung pao and almond chicken to caramelised crispy strips; and there are salt-and-pepper ribs, beef with spring onion and ginger, and teriyaki beef tenderloin. The duck list is the centrepiece: Beijing-style or Cantonese-style roast duck, orange duck and boneless crispy duck. Vegetables include stir-fried pak choi and a fish-fragrant aubergine.

Set Menus

The menu for two is €36: Chinese salad, spring rolls, three-delights fried rice, beef with bamboo and mushrooms, and chicken with almonds. There are larger menus for three and four, and a tasting menu for two at €62 with Vietnamese rolls, grilled dumplings, grilled noodles, gan shao prawns and boneless crispy duck.

Nearby

Ibiza is the residential edge of Parque del Buen Retiro, and it eats like a neighbourhood that does not need to impress anyone. The rooms are taverns, grills and seafood done properly, at prices that reflect regulars rather than visitors. Palacio de Cristal and the park are the reason to come early.
