Casa Dani, also known as Vinos 11, is a taberna on Calle Calatrava in Madrid's Palacio quarter, trading since 1861. The marble tables come loaded with jamón ibérico de bellota, cheese, lomo, cecina and conservas, poured against wine from the bar. The room reads classic, cosy and rustic.

Background

About Casa Dani / Vinos 11

The Story

The city of Madrid gave this taberna its plaque as a centenary business, dating it to 1861, although a notice in the Diario de Avisos de Madrid of 3 April 1840 shows it already existed then, which makes it one of the oldest, and best preserved, in Madrid. It has passed through several owners: in 1974 it went to Eugenio Humanes, one of the city's best-known taberneros, who taught Daniel Iglesias Alfayate the art of the wine measure. Daniel bought it in the 1980s and made it famous; since his death in 2005 it has been run by his wife Argentina and their son Dani.

The Cuisine

Taberna raciones with wine. All the charcuterie is acorn-fed ibérico chosen piece by piece: gran reserva ham cured at least four years, gran reserva loin, longaniza, chorizo and salchichón, plus chicharrones made from pig's cheek, a tapa many old tabernas have lost. There's a well-aged cheese whose origin the house keeps secret, the 'Panoli' (palm-length Cantabrian anchovies on red pepper), cecina de León, northern bonito in escabeche, mussels, Ibérico morcilla and ventresca with peppers.

The Room

The furniture has stayed original: a bar carved entirely in walnut with wine motifs, marble tables, pewter trays and wine measures, and gas lamps that still hang beside the modern lights. A National cash register is preserved intact, its top figure 6 pesetas.

Wine and Beer

Reds from Rioja and Ribera del Duero and whites from Rueda go with the charcuterie (Protos, Pittacum, Glárima, Enate, Dominio de Tares among them), with new bottles each week, plus vermouth on tap, Mahou and craft beers from emerging brewers. It opens Monday evening and Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner; call 913 65 26 21 to book, and there are set menus for groups.

Classic and cosy, with the patina of a taberna whose furniture hasn't changed: walnut, marble and gas lamps, regulars at the bar and a glass of wine with a plate of ibérico.

Getting There

Calle Calatrava 11, in La Latina, in the Palacio barrio of the Centro district, near the Puerta de Toledo; Puerta de Toledo and La Latina (L5) are the nearest metro stations.

Nearby

Palacio is the grand, historic western edge of the centre, wrapped around Palacio Real de Madrid and Plaza de Oriente. The eating runs from tavern cooking that has not changed in generations to small rooms doing something quieter and more modern. Teatro Real and Jardines de Sabatini set the pace, which is slower here.
