Mandarosso
Mandarosso opened in summer 2022 on Calle de Santa Ana, by El Rastro in La Latina, in the space that had been Adriana Restano's much-missed Nina Pasta Bar, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. Pietro Leonetti, who has run Le Cucine Mandarosso in Barcelona since 2008, brought his informal, family-style Italian cooking: Sicilian lasagne, carbonara, stracciatella with smoked sardine, handmade pastas and a parmigiano croquette named in Adriana's honour. Desserts are a house speciality, from cannoli to pastiera, and on Rastro Sundays there are homemade meatballs in tomato sauce.
Background
About Mandarosso
The Story
When Nina Pasta Bar, Adriana Restano's beloved Italian spot on Calle de Santa Ana, closed, Pietro Leonetti came from Barcelona, where he has run a restaurant since 2008, to see the space, and decided to stay. Mandarosso opened there in 2022 with a different menu but the same informality, and it keeps a nod to the past: the parmigiano croquettes are an homage to Adriana. Pietro's grandfather was a pastry chef, which explains the attention to desserts. It holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol.
The Cuisine
Italian with a southern accent, cooked daily with fresh, seasonal market ingredients, plus specials that change regularly. There's a small cellar of Italian wines, a spritz and a few house cocktails.
What to Order
The Guía Repsol recommends the spaghetti carbonara, the monkfish and the homemade rabbit. To start there's burrata with smoked sardines and citrus zest or with speck from Alto Adige, melted scamorza, vitello tonnato, smoked burrata with chicory and anchovies, mortadella with pistachio and gorgonzola cream on carasau bread, and the parmigiano croquettes. Pastas run from spaghettone carbonara with guanciale and pecorino to ricotta and spinach tortelli with 24-month parmigiano cream, handmade pasta with Genoese pesto and fried aubergine, and rigatoni with artichoke cream; slow-cooked leg of lamb is among the mains.
Desserts and Sundays
Desserts lean southern Italian: cannolo with sweet ricotta, pistachio and candied orange, pastiera (the Easter tart of ricotta and cooked wheat), lemon ricotta crostata, tiramisù and an almond and cherry ricotta tart. On Sundays Mandarosso opens at 11:00 as a café before lunch, and serves homemade meatballs for the Rastro crowd.
Hours and Booking
It serves lunch and dinner on Monday, Thursday and Friday (13:30 to 16:30 and 20:30 to 23:30), Saturday (until 17:30 and midnight) and Sunday (from 11:00), and is closed on Wednesday; Tuesday opening varies, so call ahead. Reservations are taken online.

Mandarosso Dining Experience
A seventies-flavoured, playful room, in the Guía Repsol's words, kept informal and welcoming like its predecessor: a place for family and friends to gather. It's a natural stop after a Sunday morning at El Rastro, and on Sundays it opens early as a café. The entrance is step-free.

Calle de Santa Ana 21, in La Latina, a short walk from the stalls of El Rastro in Madrid's Centro district.
Nearby
La Latina is where the city goes to graze, a slope of narrow streets built for moving between bars rather than sitting still. The eating is social and unhurried, and El Rastro brings the crowds on market days. Mercado de San Miguel and Plaza Mayor are the polished edge; the good stuff is further in.
