Barrio Húmedo
Barrio Húmedo
Barrio Húmedo opened in January 2020 on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, by the Retiro, and holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. It's the project of Luis de Paz, a Leonese industrial engineer who left a career in corporate HR to become a taverner like his grandfather, a wine-warehouse owner in León, and his father. The carta is a love letter to León: cecina in three cuts, morcilla, Bierzo peppers, Sahagún leeks, La Bañeza beans, an ensaladilla 'cazurra' made with conger eel, and wines from DO León and the Bierzo.

Background
About Barrio Húmedo
The Story
The name comes from León's Barrio Húmedo, the city's famous quarter of bars and tabernas. Luis de Paz trained as an industrial engineer and spent around two decades in human resources at large companies in Madrid before opening this taberna through a company he named Tabernero Maragato. His grandfather, also Luis de Paz, was a Maragato who made wine at a cellar in Cembranos and ran a wine warehouse in León; his father, the architect Enrique de Paz Belinchón, was a born taverner at heart. Luis spent more than a year and a half looking for premises, and chose the Retiro because, in his words, it's an area with a long tavern tradition.
The Cuisine
Spanish taberna food with León as the backbone. Because the premises have no smoke extraction, the carta leans on cured meats, conservas and cold dishes, with hot plates from a special oven. Expect cecina, including goat cecina, chacinas and Ibérico, Esla valley beef, pickles, morcilla, Bierzo peppers, Sahagún leeks, La Bañeza beans and conger al ajoarriero, alongside spoon dishes such as chickpeas with callos and lentils with smoked morcilla.
What to Order
Start with a cecina tasting, since the house serves different cuts so you can taste the difference between babilla, tapa and contra, and the ensaladilla cazurra, which swaps tuna for conger eel, one of León's most traditional fish. Then try the morcilla, Bierzo peppers and the lentils with smoked morcilla and piparras. For dessert, look for the blue-cheese cheesecake. The wine list leans on Bierzo and DO León Prieto Picudo, with nods to Cembranos.

Experience
Barrio Húmedo Dining Experience
A narrow room clad in reclaimed timber with design furniture, built around an old photograph of the wine warehouse that Luis's grandfather ran on Calle La Torre in León; he says he chose the premises because he needed a wall for that picture. There's a terrace out front, and only indoor tables can be booked. It's lively and neighbourly, and suits groups and private events.

Ibiza is the residential edge of Parque del Buen Retiro, and it eats like a neighbourhood that does not need to impress anyone. The rooms are taverns, grills and seafood done properly, at prices that reflect regulars rather than visitors. Palacio de Cristal and the park are the reason to come early.
