The Story
Tierra Brava opened inside the renovated Mercat del Ninot and is part of the Somos Esencia restaurant group, founded by Xavier Mitats -- former CEO and partner at Grupo Tragaluz, who retained the restaurant Agua when Miura Partners acquired the majority of Tragaluz in 2019 and set up his own family group run with his sons Guillem and Alex. The concept is 'market and disruptive': a restaurant that draws on its physical location inside a traditional Catalan market for ingredients and inspiration by day, transforming into a cocktail bar with live music by night. In 2021 it won the TV3 'Joc de Cartes' contest for best restaurant inside a Barcelona market.
The Cuisine
Head chef Luis Arteaga serves market-driven Mediterranean cuisine with seasonal produce from the surrounding Ninot Market stalls. The menu is organised into tapas and small plates, charcoal-fired rices, mains from the market, and homemade desserts. Current plates include a mini steak tartare croissant, oxtail brioche with truffled mayo, Fontina pizzetta with egg and truffle oil, Andalusian-style calamari with kimchi mayo, Korean-style boneless chicken wings, Señoret seafood rice, and an entrecôte with Café de Paris sauce. A midday menu is available Tuesday to Friday for around 25 EUR, and a la carte averages around 40 EUR per person without drinks.
The Team
Head chef Luis Arteaga leads the kitchen, with Irene Gil in charge of pastry. The restaurant is part of the Somos Esencia group, founded by Xavier Mitats after he left Grupo Tragaluz in 2019. Management of the group is led by his sons Guillem Mitats (director) and Alex Mitats (executive director).
