Background

About Taberna Noroeste

The Story

Taberna Noroeste is the project of owner-chefs Javier San Vicente and David López, who opened the restaurant in Poble Sec in 2018. Javier is from A Coruña in Galicia; David is from Salamanca in Castile, both regions lie in the northwest of Spain, which gives the restaurant its name. Javier trained with Carles Abellán and went on to manage Tapas 24; David worked in the kitchen at 3-Michelin-star Akelarre in San Sebastián. Together they designed a single surprise tasting menu served communally, every table receives the same progression of around ten courses simultaneously, assembled in full view from an open kitchen behind the bar. The Michelin Guide has listed the restaurant as Selected.

The Cuisine

The kitchen at Taberna Noroeste draws on Galician and Castilian tradition while working with Catalan produce. Galician seafood and lamb, local vegetables, and seasonal ingredients form the backbone of the menu. The format is a surprise, there is no printed menu presented in advance; each course arrives to the whole room at once. The open-kitchen setup means guests watch each dish being prepared and plated from their seats.

The Team

Taberna Noroeste is run entirely by Javier San Vicente and David López. Javier, from A Coruña, brings a background in Barcelona's contemporary cooking scene including time with Carles Abellán. David, from Salamanca, trained at 3-Michelin-star Akelarre. The two run both the kitchen and the front of house together, keeping the operation small and focused.
