De Paula has quietly built a loyal following in el Poble Sec through unpretentious, precisely executed gourmet burgers grilled over charcoal. The menu showcases quality ingredients, premium beef and chicken on soft mollete or dark beer bread, with standouts like the Copacabana featuring hand-cut picanha.

Background

About De Paula

The Story

De Paula is the burger shop Brazilian owner Helton Pereira de Paula opened on Carrer Creu dels Molers to give something back to the Poble Sec neighbourhood he calls home. The restaurant frames itself as 'neighbourhood people working for the neighbourhood', insisting on artisanal preparation and keeping prices low enough that locals can eat there regularly. A second outpost in Gràcia has since closed permanently, leaving Poble Sec as the sole De Paula.

The Cuisine

The menu is built around eight charcoal-grilled burgers, most served on a soft mollete bun and a handful on a dark-beer bun. Beef patties anchor the list, the signature Copacabana is built on picanha chopped by hand, alongside a chicken option (Tres Pins) and a vegetarian quinoa-and-bulgur burger (Satàlia). Sides stay deliberately short: barbecue-roasted corn, roasted potatoes, patatas bravas and a house salad. A Catalan craft-beer selection rounds out the drinks list.

The Team

De Paula is owned and led by Helton Pereira de Paula, who moved from Brazil and built the restaurant around the open charcoal grill visible behind the bar. The team describes itself as neighbourhood people, neighbourhood people, and prepares everything in-house, from the patties to the sauces.

How to Book De Paula

Booking

De Paula is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. There is no online reservation system on depaula.cat, so the room runs on a walk-in basis; peak service, Friday and Saturday evenings in particular, fills quickly, so arriving at the start of service is the safest bet. The restaurant accepts cash and cards, including contactless.

Experience

De Paula Dining Experience

De Paula occupies a long, narrow room on Creu dels Molers with a counter bar down one side and the open charcoal grill visible behind the till. White tile walls are covered in hand-written menu graffiti, colourful typography and a brasa mural that spells out 'a la brasa de carbó de tota la vida'. It is loud, bright and casual, somewhere you drop in for a burger and a Moritz rather than settle in for a long evening.
