The Story

The history of this Poble Sec corner goes back to 1908, when the premises worked as a tasca and ice-sale point, a century-old refrigerator from that era is still preserved on site. For forty years the Janiu family ran it, serving what locals remember as some of Barcelona's best anchovies and vermouth. In early 2015 the restaurant reopened as El Sortidor de la Filomena Pagès, named after the grandmother of one of the new owners, who fed neighbours through the post-war years. The modernist essence was kept intact: original early-20th-century stained-glass doors, marble tables, wooden chairs and tall ceilings give the dining room its period feel.

The Cuisine

Executive chef David Sanmartín builds the menu around traditional Catalan cooking refreshed with a modern, imaginative touch, using quality market produce. Starters lean into classic tapas, patates braves, musclos a la cervesa, pernil ibèric 100% de gla, xató català, cors de carxofa, while mains feature fricandó de vedella, galtes de porc ibèric, entrecot de Girona, bacallà a la llauna and salt-marinated tuna. A dedicated rice section covers paella del Poble Sec, arròs negre, paella de marisc and a vegan paella. Desserts close with Catalan staples such as mel i mató, crema de Sant Josep and postres de músic.

Executive chef David Sanmartín leads the kitchen, described by the restaurant as a young executive chef pairing traditional inspiration with modern, imaginative touches. Front of house pairs the kitchen's output with vermouth and wine service in the modernist bar area, in keeping with the establishment's century-plus tradition.
