Background

About La Xarxa

The Story

La Xarxa was founded in 1969 by Manuel Varela and Maite Gago, becoming a reference seafood restaurant in Barcelona. Their son Jose Manuel Varela took over in 2004, building Grupo Varela around the family legacy. In 2017 he reopened La Xarxa with a refreshed concept at Placa Molina, recovering iconic dishes from the original menu while adding contemporary tapas. After a brief COVID closure, it reopened in June 2020 in the current, more spacious location still on Placa Molina.

The Cuisine

Executive chef Carlos Allue serves market-driven Catalan cuisine with a seafood focus, balancing traditional recipes with modern sharing plates. Signature dishes include the tortilla fea de bacalao (made tableside on pan con tomate), shrimp tacos with pico de gallo, fricando with moixernons, and arroz sense feina with fish and seafood. Sharing plates from 3-24 EUR, mains from 16-33 EUR. Around 45 EUR per person without drinks.

The Team

Executive chef Carlos Allue has been with Grupo Varela since 2013, personally sourcing produce from La Boqueria market. He trained in haute cuisine before opening his own restaurant at 22, after which Jose Varela recruited him. Owner Jose Manuel Varela oversees all Grupo Varela restaurants. Google reviewers give it 4.5/5 from 789 reviews.
