Hermós, Bar de Peix is a 2023 fish bar opened inside Mercat de la Llibertat by chef Alexis Peñalver of La Pubilla and Extra Bar. The name is a nod to a Josep Pla nickname for a Palafrugell fisherman.

Background

About Hermós, Bar de Peix

The Story

Hermós, Bar de Peix opened in 2023 inside Mercat de la Llibertat in Gràcia, created by chef Alexis Peñalver - the chef behind neighbourhood favourites La Pubilla and Extra Bar. The name 'Hermós' is borrowed from a nickname used by Catalan writer Josep Pla for a fisherman from Palafrugell. Hermós transformed what used to be a market stall into a tiny seafood bar built directly next to the fishmonger's counter, turning what came off the boats that morning into plates served a few metres away. The open kitchen is deliberately minimal - a griddle, two hobs and an oven in full view - designed for minimal-intervention cooking.

The Cuisine

The kitchen is built around what the fishmonger has that day. Common plates include grilled prawns, grilled clams and scallops, fresh oysters, grilled sardines, octopus, sea bass ceviche, stewed cuttlefish, suquets de peix (Catalan, Balearic and Valencian fish stews), and daily rice dishes. Everything is cooked to order at the small counter kitchen. Prices sit around €30-40 per person for a full meal. The format favours degustació (tasting) - a few plates and a glass at the counter.

The Team

Chef Alexis Peñalver oversees Hermós alongside his other Gràcia projects La Pubilla and Extra Bar. The kitchen team is led by Alejandro Serdà and Marta Flotats, and wine service is run by Eduard Colomé. The operation is small and works directly off the adjacent fishmonger's counter - most of the kitchen is in full view, with the griddle, two hobs and oven visible to diners. In 2024 Hermós won Barcelona City Council's Restauración de los Mercados de Barcelona award, which recognises the best restaurants operating inside the city's municipal markets.

Experience

Hermós, Bar de Peix Dining Experience

The space is a converted market stall inside the Mercat de la Llibertat building: small, lively during lunch hours, with an open kitchen (griddle, two hobs and oven in full view) and the fishmonger's counter a few metres away. Expect the usual market-hall hum - fishmongers working next door, pots clattering, regulars at the bar while lunch is cooked to order. 'That wonderful friendly, energetic vibe you get when you stay for a meal at a market', as Barcelona City Council describes it.

Navigate

Hermós, Bar de Peix Location & Neighbourhood

Getting There

Hermós sits inside Mercat de la Llibertat on Plaça de la Llibertat in la Vila de Gràcia. The market is one of Barcelona's historic covered markets, opened in 1893, and is a 3-minute walk from Fontana (L3) metro. Gràcia's busy Carrer Gran de Gràcia runs a block away.

Nearby

La Vila de Gràcia is Barcelona's village-within-the-city, historically independent until the late 19th century and still the most pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood in Barcelona. The Mercat de la Llibertat is one of the neighbourhood's anchors and has become a quiet showcase for the kind of market-stall restaurants that turn a supplier relationship into a menu.
