Background

About Morralet

The Story

Morralet opened on 17 August 2021 at Carrer de Benet Mercadé, 21-23 in la Vila de Gràcia, in the space that had housed the first Capet. The restaurant is built on a simple idea: the best seasonal Mediterranean produce treated with Japanese technique and precision. The kitchen describes itself as 'an honest, creative market kitchen with fresh produce as the protagonist.' A local-leaning audience from Gràcia has made it a neighbourhood foodie destination rather than a tourist stop.

The Cuisine

Japanese-Mediterranean fusion, applying Japanese technique to seasonal Catalan market ingredients. The menu runs from appetizers and starters through mains and rice dishes: creamy cuttlefish and prawn rice, duck-breast rice with egg sausage (arròs de magret d'ànec del Lluçanès i botifarra d'ou), surf-and-turf with scallops and crisp Iberian pork, red-legged partridge cannelloni, and braised veal cheek with potato parmentier. A five-course short tasting menu is €52 per person; a six-course menu is €59.80. Wine pairings are €25.80 and €30.80 respectively. À la carte average spend is approximately €45 without drinks.

The Team

The kitchen is led by chef Gonzalo Álvarez. Born in Caracas with Asturian and Canarian roots, he trained at the Hofmann hospitality school in Barcelona and worked at Neichel (Barcelona), L'Esguard under Miguel Sánchez Romera (Llavaneres), Sumoll (Vilafranca del Penedès) and Mugaritz in the Basque Country. At 30 he moved to Japan and cooked at Ogasawara Hakushakutei, a Tokyo restaurant with 1 Michelin star, and studied traditional Japanese cooking under Hiroyoshi Hishida of Restaurante Mibu. He returned to Barcelona after the Tokyo Olympic cycle to open Morralet in 2021. Anouar Mouchih is the pastry chef; Yumi Omiya runs the dining room.
