The Story
Bar Bodega Gol was founded in 1943 by Isidre Gol Sole, becoming a cornerstone of the Sant Antoni neighbourhood. The second generation under Josep Maria Gol ran it from 1966 until retirement. In 2020, Xavi Caballero and Cristina Echaurren took over, and in 2024 new owners Sergi Fernandez and Edu Jarque installed chefs Roger Soler and Rodrigo Castillo. Despite changing hands, the bodega has maintained its essence -- vintage decor with barrels and old photographs, homestyle Catalan cooking, and the beloved fork breakfasts. The Repsol Solete 2023 recognised the quality of this historic neighbourhood institution.
The Cuisine
Chefs Roger Soler and Rodrigo Castillo bring an unlikely but effective partnership -- Roger, a self-taught cook from Lleida who spent five generations as a barber before switching to cooking at 50, and Rodrigo, a Peruvian engineer who trained at Escuela Hofmann. The kitchen focuses on traditional Catalan homestyle cooking: calamares encebollados, caracoles fritos, girella rebozada (Catalan haggis), cap-i-pota, fideus a la cassola, and croquetas. Roger sources ingredients daily from Sant Antoni market and brings Lleida products. Fork breakfasts are a signature morning tradition.
The Team
Chefs Roger Soler and Rodrigo Castillo met at Colmado Wilmot and were brought together by coordinator Joan Romans (ex-Teatro Kitchen). Owners Sergi Fernandez and Edu Jarque manage the business. Service is casual and warm -- the hospitality of a neighbourhood bodega where regulars and newcomers mix.
