Cartoixa de Valldemossa

A former royal palace turned Carthusian monastery in Valldemossa, in the Serra de Tramuntana at over 400 metres elevation. Built originally for King Sancho of Majorca, the property was transferred to Carthusian monks in 1399; its neoclassical church was constructed from 1751, replacing an earlier 1446 structure, and the monastic community left in 1835 amid the Mendizábal ecclesiastical confiscations. Composer Frédéric Chopin and writer George Sand rented a cell here over the winter of 1838-1839, during which Chopin completed his 24 Preludes, Op. 28; the cell is now a museum holding his Pleyel piano and manuscripts.
