Trafalgar is a bar near Plaza de Olavide in Chamberí, on the corner of Calle de Alburquerque and Calle Palafox, opened in spring 2022 by David Yllera and Nacho Aparicio, and it holds a Solete in the Guía Repsol. Steel trays, leather stools and classic raciones with a modern touch set the tone: layered 'amilhojadas' bravas, anchovies on brioche with smoked butter, steak tartare on a potato millefeuille and ember-grilled pluma ibérica, plus the La Fina cheeseburger. The drinks run from signature cocktails like the Cuzco to classics, more than 70 wines, vermouths and sherries, and it's open from 13:00 until late every day.

Background

About Trafalgar

The Story

David Yllera and Nacho Aparicio opened Trafalgar in spring 2022 in a space that had been a Segovian-style inn, keeping its old floor and adding a pool table; in their words, it's a bar for themselves and people their age. It's now one of three bars in the group, alongside Vergara on Calle de Serrano and Moret on Paseo del Pintor Rosales. The Guía Repsol gave it a Solete in autumn 2023, noting that it has stood out in central Madrid since the day it opened.

The Cuisine

Classic Spanish bar raciones with a modern edge, built for sharing, from gildas and croquetas to grilled meats, with sandwiches, burgers and desserts. There are gluten-free and vegan options for the burger, and a gluten-free bikini.

What to Order

The Guía Repsol's picks are the anchovies on brioche with smoked butter, the steak tartare montadito on potato millefeuille and the pluma ibérica a la brasa with homemade chimichurri. The bravas amilhojadas are the house signature, and the menu also lists smoked-sardine mini cocas, txangurro brioche, griddled 'ceviche-style' zamburiñas, a bluefin tuna tartare montadito, Iberian ham croquetas, ensaladilla, confit artichokes, melting torreznos, tempura prawns with mojo, monkfish with bilbaína sauce and sliced old-cow sirloin. For something in bread: La Fina cheeseburger, a smoked lacón and Comté bikini, a pastrami mollete or a calamari bocatín. Desserts include cheesecake and a brioche torrija.

The Bar

Signature cocktails include the Pinche Rosita, Nikita, Embajador, Sakura Martini, Lady Chamberí and the Cuzco (pisco, green apple, lime and ginger ale), alongside classics such as the Pisco Sour, Margarita, Paloma, Dry Martini and Gimlet, and alcohol-free cocktails. There are more than 70 wines from around Spain and a few from abroad, Champagne and cava, vermouths from Madrid, León, Jerez, Pontevedra and Tarragona, sherries from fino to palo cortado, dessert wines and the full Mahou range.

Hours and Booking

Trafalgar opens every day from 13:00, until 02:00 Sunday to Thursday and 02:30 on Friday and Saturday. Tables can be booked online through the bar's website.

Experience

Trafalgar Dining Experience

A billiard table sits inside a former Segovian-style inn, with the original weathered flooring, clean walls and big corner windows. The owners describe the vibe as very social and open, and it draws a lively crowd for sharing plates over drinks well into the night. There's a terrace, children and pets are welcome, and the entrance is step-free.

Nearby

Trafalgar is the calm shoulder between Malasaña and the wider avenues, residential enough to feel lived-in and central enough to walk out of. The eating skews to neighbourhood favourites and small confident kitchens rather than destinations. It gets quieter, and better value, the further you go from Gran Vía.
